Copyright and legal notices

How we work

typesearch is a search engine for news. Our results link to articles and show their headline, date and outlet, the description the publisher gives them and, at most, a very short excerpt. We never return the full text of an article, and the content belongs to its publishers. Still, if you believe something we show infringes your rights, we want to know, and we act fast.

How to send a copyright notice

Under the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. §512(d), which uses the elements of §512(c)(3)), a notice must include:

• a physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner, or of a person authorized to act on their behalf;
• identification of the copyrighted work you claim is infringed or, if there are several, a representative list;
• identification of the material you claim is infringing and want removed, with enough information for us to find it: the URL of the article and, if you have it, the typesearch result or request ID;
• your contact information: name, address, telephone number and email;
• a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law;
• a statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or authorized to act on the owner’s behalf.

What we do with a valid notice

• We remove the URLs from our results and delete any text we stored from them, usually the same day.
• We tell you when it’s done.

Counter-notices

If an article of yours was taken out of our results because of a notice, and you believe that was a mistake or a misidentification, you can send us a counter-notice, modeled on 17 U.S.C. §512(g)(3), with:

• your physical or electronic signature;
• identification of the material that was removed and of where it appeared before it was removed, such as its URL;
• a statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief that the material was removed because of a mistake or misidentification;
• your name, address and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the U.S. federal district court for the judicial district of your address (or, if your address is outside the United States, of any judicial district in which we may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice or their agent.

We send a copy to the person who sent the original notice. Unless they tell us, within 10 business days, that they have gone to court to stop the use, we put the material back between 10 and 14 business days after receiving the counter-notice.

Customers who repeatedly misuse results

Our customers agree, in our Terms of Service, to show the source of each result and link to the original, and not to rebuild, republish or redistribute articles. We may suspend or close the accounts of customers who repeatedly misuse results or infringe other people’s rights.

Notices from other countries

You don’t need the U.S. format if you’re elsewhere. We accept notices in English, Spanish or Portuguese, by email to copyright@typesearch.ai or by post to the address above, and handle them under the law that applies:

• European Union and United Kingdom: copyright notices, including those based on press publishers’ rights and on text and data mining reservations. We already honor machine-readable reservations: see the signals we honor.
• Brazil: notices under the Copyright Law (Law 9,610/1998).
• Mexico: notice and takedown under the Federal Copyright Law. If the other side sends a counter-notice, we tell the rights holder, who then has 15 business days to take legal action; if they don’t, we put the material back.
• Chile: under Law 17,336 on Intellectual Property, removal follows a court order. Write to copyright@typesearch.ai and we’ll tell you where to serve judicial notices.
• Argentina: notices under Law 11,723 on Intellectual Property, at our address in Argentina.

If you simply want your site out

You don’t need a legal notice for that. Use the publishers form: exclusions are applied within minutes (we commit to under 24 hours), stored data is deleted within 72 hours, and we never ask why.
